Anti-cancer drugs called histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors have been shown to enhance long-term memory, according to scientists at the University of California Irvine.

The drug is reported to improve long-term memory and strengthen neural connections in the brains of mice.

The study suggests that HDAC inhibitors applied directly to the hippocampus, have been used in trials to attack tumors, may prove useful in treating people with Alzheimer’s and certain other brain diseases. It allows genes involved in memory storage to relax and stimulate the protein structure that categorizes genomic DNA effortlessly, enabling easier activation of genes involved in memory storage.

The author of the study, Marcelo Wood, confirmed that his team understands the results, knowing fully working of the drug at the molecular level and the impact it has on certain proteins.

The findings, which are published in the June 6 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience, suggest that it can impact memory, cancer and neurodegeneration and other conditions such as drug addiction and other psychiatric disorders and help cure people with Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s diseases and Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome.

However, the study is based on experimented on mice and will take time before they are applied on humans.
