‘Nature provides us with everything’, what we need is just to recognize those. The connotation is again proved as bamboo seeds are going straight into stomachs of many Mizo’s these days. The reason is that due to feeding on these seeds the rodent population has increased logarithmically and here you have the clue. Yeah! People have been trying these seeds to increase their libido. These seeds appear after flowering of tall grass every 50 years. However, as per the mythology these seeds indicate famines.
But that’s not the case for the people. Thara and Dawngi, a couple who had been married since nine years but were issueless are grateful to these seeds for bringing a hild in their lives. Thara said, ‘We tried everything, spent about Rs.800,000. I was completely down and hopeless. It’s difficult for me to say that bamboo seeds battled fate, but we were not under any treatment at that time. I was apprehensive, but after my wife bore a child, I have accepted the seed’s virtues.’
However, the fact that animals that feed on these seeds do multiply at a faster rate, can’t be ignored. C. Rokhuma, a bamboo flowering expert who has been doing research work on them said,
‘My experience convinced me that the seeds enhanced the fertility of rats. I don’t know if it works on humans but I am sure it acts as a sex stimulant for rats.’
The theory is yet to be established by scientists. As per the reports of The National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad, these seeds don’t contain any element that can increase the fertility. But James Lalsiamliana, assistant plant protection officer at the Mizoram Agriculture Department said, ‘A hundred grams of bamboo seeds contains 60.36 gram of carbohydrate and 265.6 kg calorie of energy. This amount of carbohydrate and energy can easily make any living being active…even in sex.’ He also promises that he knows many people who felt an increase in their sex drive after eating these seeds.
Some scientists also believe that it is just the abundance of food that makes rodents multiply at a faster rate in mautam.The bamboo seeds are already getting commercialized as people are busy preparing tastier dishes and pickles with them. WOW! That’s what we call marketing strategies.
