A new stem-cell technology can cure spinal-cord injury

Rats with spinal-cord injury can walk again, why not humans? Thanks to a new stem cell technology. The rats were given astrocytes in an experiment, resulted in 40-percent rise in nerve-fiber growth. For the first time, astrocytes produced in tissue culture and revealed significant revival of function.

Scientists are focusing on using stem cells to repair the central nervous system in humans for many years. This development has given hope to make further research in this area.

In the trials on rats, they were given astrocyte cell and they formed less scar tissue and nerve damage. Their locomotion improved also and they were able to walk normally. The brains of the rats also showed improvement.
