Coffee and tea, two beverages we all just love to sip. Now science is giving tea and coffee aficionados around the world all the more reasons to drink these two popular beverages. Many health benefits have been attributed to the regular, sensible consumption of both tea and coffee. One such latest research infact brings to forefront the role of tea in improving sun-damaged skin.

Published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, this study conducted with over 2000 individuals, highlights the benefits of drinking a cup of tea a day in reducing the chances of developing skin cancer. The risk of developing the two most prevalent forms of skin cancer-squamos and basal cell carcinoma is considerably lowered by just mere consumption of a cup of tea daily.

This health benefit conferred by all forms of tea- green, black and herbal is attributed to the antioxidants present in the different types of teas. These antioxidants work to counter the ill effects of the sun’s ultraviolet rays on the skin. However, this does not mean that you regard this as a cure for skin cancers. In addition, other common precautions need to be taken in order to avert the development of skin cancer.

Dr. Bryan Chen, a dermatologist says,

“The use of sunscreens to cover up the best that you can from the sun, the use of hats during the day, and try to avoid the sun during the hours of 10 in the morning to two in the afternoon when the sun intensity is the greatest outdoors – that in combination with drinking tea — I think would be useful.”

Therefore, a little wise thinking and a little wise drinking can save you from the trouble of skin cancer.
