If you ever wondered why such strong competition exists between software developers when it comes to developing for the Apple iPhone, then let mobile phone applications developer, Larry Borsato, enlighten you. Borsato turned his back on BlackBerry, Symbian and Android to develop for Apple. He explains that the BlackBerry is primarily an email device that uses JAVA ME applications, which have very limited user interface, with a market opportunity that is much lesser when compared to the Symbian. On the other hand, although the Nokia-owned Symbian has 13 times more subscribers, there hasn’t been a substantial uptake of the mobile Web. Google’s Android has the potential to provide most of what the iPhone does but currently does not have a subscriber base and Borsato does not want to risk developing for a product that is as yet non-existent.
Borsato believes that the iPhone SDK, available only on Mac and capable of building applications for a very small market of devices, has a bigger advantage over the rest because it has redefined the mobile phone market. He also adds that the final reason why he chose to work for Apple is because the iPhone looks ‘seriously cool’! So at the end of the day, even amongst professional developers, it is the cool phone that wins.
