Zero energy island: Segway creator’s green dream

North Dumpling is a tiny little island close to the coast of Connecticut and is owned by the inventor of Segway, Dean Kamen. The entire place is being turned into green heaven and a miniature eco-example for the world to follow, with new lighting solutions, energy sources that are going to make it a ‘zero energy island’ very soon. The island already uses solar panels to generate most of its energy needs and this energy will be sufficient to run the entire island. Come next spring, and the new LED lights that are going to be used to illuminate it, will further reduce energy consumption.

Dean Kamen has been working hard to achieve a ‘zero energy island’ and by using LED lights provided by Philips Color Kinetics and other power saving methods, Kamen aims to achieve his dream. The use of LED lighting will reduce the islet’s energy needs by 70 percent and even the use of colored lighting will still reduce it by a good 50 percent. Once this changes to LED lighting and new power saving features does take place, the North Dumpling Island will not just go green, but will showcase to the world how this small model can be translated to large scale models with a bit more effort and execution.
