How to make playdough

Playing with dough is undoubtedly a favorite pastime for kids as it can be made at home and it is non toxic and safe too. A playdough is very easy to prepare. The mothers can make it at home and hand over to their small kids. You need to be very careful about the proportion of the ingredients that you are using so that the dough does not become too hard or too sticky. Here are a few dough making recipes that can be made for the kids below 2 years of age and a little older too. However, supervision of adults is required.

1. Rubbery playdough

Materials required

1 cup of cornstarch

1 1/2 cups of water

2 cups of baking soda

Method

Mix all the three components properly with the help of a fork. Boil the mixture under a medium flame and heat it till it gets thickened. Use a spoon to place it on a wax paper or onto a plate.

2. Nature’s playdough

Materials required

1 cup of flour

1 cup of water

A half cup of salt

2 tablespoons of cream of tartar

2 tablespoons of oil

Juice of carrot, spinach and beet

Method

All you need to do is to mix flour, oil and salt together. To this mixture, slowly add the water. Heat the complete mixture over a medium flame. Stir the dough continuously till the time it thickens and becomes stiff. Spoon it onto the wax paper and leave it to cool down. Then, knead the dough consistently with the hands. You can then make it into balls and then add the drops of vegetable juices like carrot and spinach. These drops make the playdough attractive giving it color as per your desire and the color of the vegetable juice.

3. Playdough

Materials required

4 cups of flour

1 cup of salt

1 cup of water

2 tablespoons of alum

2 tablespoons of oil

Liquid to color dough

Method

Mix the flour thoroughly along with salt and powdered paint. Now, mix oil and water; you may also add food coloring liquid, if you want. Keep on stirring the oil and water mixture. Then add it to the flour mixture that you made earlier. After mixing the two gradually, knead the dough by adding little liquid to it. If the dough becomes too hard, then add some water to it. In case, the dough becomes very sticky, add more flour to it. This will give a proper texture and right thickness to the playdough.

4. Alum playdough

Materials required

1 cup of salt and water each

2 cups of flour

2 tablespoons of alum and oil each

Food coloring liquid

Method

Pour all the dry ingredients into a pan and then stir this mixture. Add food color and oil to the water. Stir the liquid well and add it to the dry ingredients. Mix them well and knead the dough properly. Sticky dough is not the right one, so add more flour to it. Keep it inside a refrigerator to get the best results.

5. Just like the real playdough

Materials required

1 cup of water and flour each

1 tablespoon of powdered alum and oil

2 tablespoons of vanilla

A half cup of salt

Food coloring liquid

Method

First of all, take all the dry ingredients and mix them well. Then, add water and oil to this mixture. Cook the overall dry and liquid mixture over a medium flame. Stir it continuously until it becomes thick just like mashed potatoes. After the heating session is over, add vanilla and food coloring liquid to it. You can divide the dough into balls and then knead it properly.

6. Oatmeal playdough

Materials required

1 cup of water and flour each

2 cups of oatmeal

Method

Take a bowl filled with flour and oatmeal. Add water to the dry ingredient gradually. Mix the ingredients and then knead it properly. This playdough is the one which is unique in its texture as it is sticky. You can then combine it along with some clay too.

7. Nutty butter playdough

Materials required

1 cup of peanut butter, honey, oatmeal and powdered milk each

Method

Mix all the components together and the dough is ready to play with.

Caution: Do not hand over the playdough to the infants as they should not consume honey.

8. Kool aid playdough:

Materials required

Two and a half cups to three cups of flour

3 tablespoons corn oil

2 cups of boiling water along with a package of Kool aid of any flavor as per your wish

A half cup of salt

A tablespoon of alum

Method

Mix all the components and then knead them with flour. If the dough becomes sticky then use extra flour. This play is very colorful in appearance with a nice fragrance. The playdough is flexible as it is too soft.
