Infigen’s 140.7 MW wind farm set to power Kurnell desal plant

On Wednesday, Infigen Energy will inaugurate the 67-turbine Capital wind farm in Canberra, which will power a desalination plant at Kurnell in Southern Sydney. It will be the largest wind farm in Australia with a capacity of 140.7 megawatts (MW) enough to power more than 60,000 homes. However, a 20-year agreement signed last year ensures a lion’s share i.e. 40MW to Sydney Water for its desalination plant and the rest to the national electricity grid.

We expect that desalination plants will be a significant part of our business, going forward. It’s expected that there will be half a dozen or so still to come around the country.

Infigen (Babcock & Brown Wind Partners formerly) managing director Miles George expressed his optimism amid speculations suggesting its wind farms in the United States, Germany and France go selling at knockdown prices. He asserts the need to develop more desalination plants, and resultantly more wind farms.
