Homemade math games for kindergartners

When you have a kindergartner at home, it is essential that you engage him or her with entertaining and educational activities. With math games, you can teach your kids basic maths skills. If however, your kid doesn’t like a particular game, you can get them involved by enticing your children to try their best by giving them small rewards and prizes like number coloring books and math flash cards.

These maths games are very simple to make and with only a few supplies you can start making your own games. Here’s a look at a few homemade math games for Kindergartners.

1. Paper games

You can make a simple bingo game for kindergarteners by writing numbers in bingo squares. Then you can call out random numbers and make the children mark the cards. The winner of the game is the one who gets a bingo. He or she will yell “I love math” and will win a prize. For a more challenging game for the game you can call out problems like “2+2” to denote the bingo numbers instead of calling out random numbers. You need to check if the children have marked the correct answer for the problems. Otherwise, they must remove the marker and wait for the next problem. You can have both addition and subtraction problems.

2. Match games

You can make a match game by filling up numbers from one to 10 on index cards, twice. You need to place the cards face down and make the children match numbers. The child with the most pairs found is declared the winner. You can make the game more challenging by writing addition or subtraction equation on one card and the number on the other.

3. Tossing games

Write the numbers from one to 10 on plastic cups and spread the cups on the ground. The rule of the game requires your kindergarteners to toss balls, coins or blocks into corresponding cups. For example, if you hand two pennies to your kid, he has to toss the pennies into the cup marked “4”. Or you can give the child three balls and ask him to toss it to the corresponding cup.

4. Other games

You can make other games, too. All it needs is a little creativity. With milk cartons, you can make another counting game. You need to cut off the milk cartons from the top and cover with paper. Make a drawing of a door on each carton and give it a number. Hand popsicle sticks to the children which can be used as people. The aim of the game is to place the correct number of people in the corresponding door. If a door has the number three on it, they must place three sticks in the house. You can make this game more fun by making the kids draw faces and paint on the popsicle sticks or the cartons.
