In an effort to get official recognition from an organization that gives environmental ratings to buildings, the developers of the Florida Marlins stadium are trying their best to green the entire construction process. The old concrete pieces from the demolished Orange Bowl are being repurposed into support beams, while most of the building materials are produced locally. The new ballpark will be the first LEED-certified stadium in the country.

The new Florida Marlin stadium is being constructed under a proactive plan to green the entire construction process, resulting into an eco-conscious stadium. During a media walk-through the ballpark yesterday, all the eco-friendly systems were displayed. Developers are looking forward to reduce the carbon footprints as much as possible. They seek to obtain LEED Silver Certification by controlling storm water runoff, recycling 90 percent of waste material and keeping hazardous chemicals from spreading into the community.

Bringing the stadium closer to their aim is the heat-reflecting white roof, low-emission products to maintain air quality and large glass panels for increased natural lighting. The $642 million project will also work towards reducing automobile emissions by promoting easy access public transportation, providing about 2,000 spaces for bicycles and giving priority parking to people driving low emission cars. The stadium is scheduled to open in 2012.
