Father of 'Green Revolution' honored

His lone life-long battle against hunger may not be able to meet the demands of such healing hands, but his efforts are considerably important in creating a paradigm. Yes, am talking of the 93-year-old Nobel laureate, — an American agricultural scientist — who is regarded as the father of the ‘Green Revolution’ in farmingNorman Ernest Borlaug.

He has been honored with the Congressional Gold Medal for his life-long cause for the environment. His efforts have nearly doubled the food supply in many countries including Mexico, India and Pakistan.

It was in the mid-20th century; Borlaug developed the disease-resistant, high-yield wheat varieties.

Not just that. The Nobel laureate also helped many developing countries with hands-on-assistance in growing these crops. He also provided with modern farming techniques needed to successfully yield the high-end grains.

Though hunger continues to gripple poor countries, Dr. Borlaug’s contribution is stays an inspiration for both agriculturists and conservationists. Steny Hoyer, Democratic leader of the U.S. House of Representatives said,

Without question, Dr. Borlaug, your life and your life’s work … saving more than 1 billion people from famine and starvation, are an inspiration.

Borlaug was the first Nobel Peace Prize recipient for work in agriculture in 1970. In 1977, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Gerald Ford.

Awards are an inspiration for the recipient — true, but what importantly needs notice is the contribution that brought the award – So, will Borlaug get his contemporary in the present world hunger and food crisis?
