China’s economic boom slaughters coastal ecology

chinas shoreline WFaHn 2263The economic boom in China has come with enormous environmental costs. Experts believe that the coastal waters of China are dangerously polluted and contaminated by major pollutants, like inorganic nitrogen and phosphate. As a result, the country’s coastal marsh, coral reefs and mangrove forests are vanishing at an alarming rate. The worst affected areas are the bays and river estuaries where China’s marine economy is developing at an incredible pace and marine resources are being widely exploited.

As the country pushes forward it’s developmental plans, more land is being reclaimed for development along the coastal areas to build ports, cities and related infrastructure, which is putting additional pressure on the fragile coastal environment. China has a vast shoreline. Environmental damage along this enormous shoreline can have far reaching adverse environmental impacts
