‘Go green’ is not a mere motto; we can see the world act upon it too. This time following the green slogan is the Bronx. One of the Five Boroughs of New York City, the Bronx is taking several eco-friendly initiatives to improve the health of citizens and the environment. The initiatives include planting rooftop gardens, vegetative walls and flashing solar panels.
The increasing asthma rate primarily from truck emissions in the industrial South Bronx has become a matter of concern to many. To deal with this ugly situation FlatRate Moving and Storage is on its way to give a helping hand. It has started buying eco-friendly trucks using special toxin-reducing filters, in addition to a 50,000-watt solar power system that the company installed for its new 40,000-square-foot facility. Another company going green out of concern about local asthma rates and for continued growth and financial reasons is solar power system in Port Morris, which has recently installed 168 solar panels supplying 23% of the electricity.
Other businesses going green include Habitat for Humanity, a name known to build shelter for the poor. The company lately installed a roof garden at 715 Fox St. at Leggett Ave. The new seven-story building with 50 apartments had a 2,400-square-foot roof that was perfect for a garden, with 1,200 flats of shrubs, flowers and plants. Delta Airlines has granted $100, 000 for the garden that will save energy costs on heating and air conditioning while producing oxygen and reducing carbon dioxide. To green the interiors of the structure Palladia Inc., a large multi-service agency has funded for the low-emitting particleboard for walls, nontoxic paint and carpets free from formaldehyde. Special attention was given to make the building well insulated and ventilated to cut down on mold.
Metal Management, Inc., a Chicago-based company planted a green wall to cut down on pollution and save the environment. The 8,000-square-foot green wall in Hunts Point now runs a complete city block. These sustainable initiatives are opening avenues for education, entrepreneurship and employment adding to the quality of life in the Bronx.
