2,000 discarded plastic bottles pile up to satirize our recycling habits

bottledproject

More than 2,000 discarded bottles went into the making of the art installation, dubbed as Bottled V.1., pictured above. The bottles were collected from school waste containers, city streets, parks, and the Hackensack and Hudson Rivers’ beachfronts. Jersey City Museum and artist Pollie Barden collaborated with over 1,000 students from the Learning Community Charter School, M.S. Number 4, P.S. Number 8, P.S. Number 23, and the Ethical Community Charter School to erect this low-resolution landscape motif.

Where the highlighted portion of the installation satirizes the fact that we recycle only 1/3rd of the plastic bottles, roughly 67% of them add to the landfills. The Hudson County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs/Tourism Development, the Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders, Liberty State Park’s Interpretive Center and the Jersey City Museum cooperatively sponsor this program. Moreover, the program was amply supported by Hudson County Freecycle, ScrapCycle and the Recycling Program of NYU.

As it runs from January 28 through June 2010, those who wish to steal it from the horse’s mouth could visit Mack-Cali building on Christopher Columbus Drive in Jersey City. On-line visitors may click here.
