Vitamin D increases sperm motility

Vitamin D increases sperm motility

Vitamin D has been known to affect reproduction both in animals and humans in some way. But now Danish researchers have demonstrated the relationship between the vitamin D concentration in body fluids, especially blood, and fertility in males. The study suggests a positive association between sperm motility and the level of vitamin D in blood.

There are many causes of male infertility and deficiency of vitamin D in their body can be a potential risk.

1. Research
The researchers from the University of Copenhagen and Copenhagen University Hospital carried out this research. The study was conducted on 300 normal Danish men to show the relationship between the levels of vitamin D in their blood and the motility of sperm cells. In addition to this human spermatozoa were treated with vitamin D in laboratory as well.

2. Findings
The study suggested a parallel link between the vitamin D level in body fluids and the speed of spermatozoa. Also, the human spermatozoa activated with vitamin D in laboratory were stimulated and showed a faster movement. This study proposes that vitamin D can improve male reproduction. These findings were published in the scientific journal Human Reproduction.

3. Limitations
This finding does not determine the fact that vitamin D supplements are beneficial for infertile men or can improve the quality of semen in males. Therefore, the premise needs further testing before making any recommendations towards altering fertility treatments.
