The truth about health foods

truth about health foods

Most of us seem to be confident about our health when living on the so-called healthy foods. They may not be as healthy as thought. Read ahead, to find what an Aussie film director did to prove his point.

The experiment

He documented everything in a movie called ‘That Sugar Film’. Damon Gamaeu gained 15 pounds by eating what Americans consider as healthy food in a period of 60 days. In his movie, he has revealed how the people of America have done damage to their health over a period of time.

The number of people in the US with the Metabolic Syndrome will cause you to contemplate, 56 million and rising. Yes, you read it correct. Damon consumed no junk food within these 60 days, just the food that we call healthy.

Superfood snack, granola bars, juice cocktails, low-fat sugary yogurt, smoothies and the kind of food that we think is healthy. What he got in return was a high score in blood pressure, cholesterol, sugar and triglycerides.

The ‘fat-free’ bandwagon

The most common pit fall in the race to a healthy diet is the ‘low-fat’ and ‘fat-free’ food bandwagon. Saturated fat is unhealthy is a myth. The manufacturers of processed foods removed saturated fat from their products.

As a result, the food tasted atrocious, to make it even they added extra sugar in it. Despite the label calling a snack “low-fat” and “healthy,” it contained high amount of sugar. This sugar causes an increase in weight and invites a host of diseases.

Fruit juice

Fruit juice is fruit minus most of the nutrients, especially fiber. The general notion is that since the liquid is extracted from fruit it ought to be healthy. Ripped off the fiber and essential nutrients, the main component left in juice is sugar. This is when the juice is 100% natural, when it comes to the boxed packed juices, there are a lot of artificial stuff added to it. In some case there is no actual fruit extract in the juice, just chemicals made to taste like juice.

The bottom line is many foods that are thought to be healthy aren’t healthy and often pose a risk to our health. Consulting a dietician before switching over to a diet is necessary.
