Prevent elderly falls with vitamin D

old man 64Last year U.S. federal health officials’ claim stating that death rate from falling has risen about 55 percent for people 65 and older in the United States since the 1990s was really deplorable. However, now good news has also crept in exhilarating elderly people. According to this news, if elderly people take Vitamin D then they may bring down their chances of falling.

Actually, this fact came out through a new study, according to which seniors in a nursing home taking a high daily dose of vitamin D experienced 72 percent fewer falls when compared to those taking a placebo. Depicting it as an important study Kerry Broe and Douglas Kiel of the Hebrew Senior Life Institute for Aging Research at Harvard University said:

Past studies have shown that vitamin D could help prevent falls in seniors, and may be due to a possible strengthening effect the vitamin has on the musculoskeletal system. Until now, we didn’t know what dosage amount would be effective.

Results coming out of this study are definitely substantial. However, to comment on the issue that how far these sanguine results are linked to vitamin D, at this moment would be too premature. Therefore, if elderly people wish to bring in use these findings then in my opinion they must first consult their doctors. As the study, authors Kerry Broe and Douglas Kiel also assert:

Taking this dose of vitamin D should be done only through the approval of a patient’s doctor and certain conditions, such as high blood calcium levels, need to be considered by a physician.

To vindicate Kerry Broe and Douglas Kiel’s statement that past studies have also suggested that vitamin D could help prevent falls in seniors here is a short look into those previous studies:-
