China doesn’t agree with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warning on Chinese toothpaste, they said that low levels of diethylene glycol is not harmful for the human body.

In response to an FDA warning — which states that China made toothpaste may have a poisonous ingredient, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine gave a statement that — it is safe to consume the chemical in small amount, which is in news these days.

According to their research the toothpaste that has diethylene glycol up to 15.6 percent about which US is worried, is absolutely safe for consumption.

The US began checking imports of chinese toothpaste, as soon as media reported that the toothpaste may have diethylene glycol, a solvent which is being used in place of glycerin, a sweetener mostly used in drug manufacturing.

After discovering that toothpaste which are made in China, contains nearly 3 to 4% diethylene glycol, the FDA gave a warning statement about the Chinese toothpaste this weekend.

But, officials from the Health Ministry of China said that the chemical diethylene glycol is considered to be less poisonous and it does not store in the human body, and they also mentioned that there is no such proof that it can be harmful or may cause cancer or many other diseases.

The AQSIQ also stated that they have sent to FDA, a list of the components which is present in the toothpaste, exported to the United States. The list also contains the name of the ingredient i.e. diethylene glycol. And along with this the labels of the toothpaste had been also registered with the FDA, it means that it could be sold in the United States.

The AQSIQ said in a prepared statement:

Therefore, the FDA warning is unscientific, irresponsible and contradictory. We’ve lodged a representation to the FDA and asked it to clarify the facts in a scientific manner as soon as possible.

Joseph Famulare, an official of FDA, said that the United States laws can put ban on diethylene glycol use as an ingredient in toothpaste. He also mentioned that current safety scandals have shown the utility and importance of being fully aware about all the components and intermediates which are being used in the products.
