'Bionic Eye' developed for Visual Sensation

Austrian scientists have developed a device called ‘Bionic eye‘ for the people suffering from rare form of genetic blindness. The device though stimulates limited visual aid but proved beneficial to blind patients. It has undergone various clinical trials on human’s eye surface placing small electrodes giving electric current to stimulate retina.

It contained a pair of glasses with a video camera to pick up images transferred to electrodes with the help of computer. These electrodes stimulate the retina from optic nerve to visual part of brain.

It successfully worked on a patient who after a long darkness availed to see a single spot of light. Attempts are now been made to develop second type of bionic eye for the patients with ruined optic nerve using implantation of electrodes on visual part of brain.

I think it will be a remarkable attempt made by Bionic Eye Foundation at Sydeny of Prince of Wales Hospital, raising the hopes of millions of patients suffering from genetic blindness. More research work is required to end its limitations.
