New drug 'Vidaza' may help elderly patients endure AML Chemotherapy

It can be a stiff problem for elder patients to get treatment with chemotherapy called acute myeloid leukemia (AML) as some patients can’t bear standard treatments, may be due to age factor. Now, their problem gets a solution with a new drug.

AML patients treatment begins with induction chemotherapy followed by consolidation therapy, under which induction chemotherapy involves complete reduction where as consolidation therapy to avoid recurrence. Some patients can’t be able to tolerate this kind of therapy.

The new drug ‘vidaza’ meant for myelodysplastic syndromes, approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but does not show promising effects helpful to tolerate standard treatments. Trials conducted suggested that patients responding to vidaza resulted in increased survival period.

I believe that drug can be beneficial from the view point of long survival period but the study does not provide clear vision whether vizada use can help patients to tolerate standard treatments. Further, experimentations are required with the drug to provide soothing effect helpful in bearing AML treatment by patients.
