Scotland’s Marine Bill: A ray of hope at last

Scotland's Marine Bill

The marine life is under continuous damage by various human activities. The sea-birds are hooked up by the fishing ship, large and small all the fishes are caught for food, coral-reefs are dying fast because of global warming and chemicals discharged to water. Are we all getting so much selfish and indifferent to the mute creatures that their cry seems nothing to us?

The Scottish government has passed a Marine Bill to stop the uncontrolled destruction of life under the sea. Environmentalists demand a management group for the better execution of the plans. Because this bill is not just a ban on fishing etc, but also include specific measures to help the coastal communities which depend on a productive sea for their livelihoods. According to Helen McLachlan, Scotland’s marine policy officer, the country is enjoying a major part of the UK’s fishing industry. And thus, there should be proper plans to manage and protect the sea-resources in the most effective way. Jonny Hughes, head of policy at the Scottish Wildlife Trust says,

The bill should herald the dawn of a new era for Scotland’s seas

Scotland’s coasts are shelter for numerous varieties of wildlife, including whales, dolphins and porpoises. There are more than 40,000 species including dolphins and seabirds. But experts say that tremendous destruction has already been done to these creatures. The number is gradually decreasing. Kittiwakes, the soft-white seabirds are having breeding problems because of changing environment.

We have much expectation from this newly proposed Maraine-Bill meant to safeguard the endangered species. If this plan is properly executed, we hope to see the sea-birds and large fishes moving around freely in the lap of nature, but also without having any adverse impact on fishing communities and tourism industry.
