You cannot strike a better deal than being paid for things that is nothing more waste to you. People of Philadelphia are receiving monetary benefits for recycling paper, plastic, glass and aluminum. The new recycling initiative titled the ‘Philadelphia Recycling Rewards’ could help households receive benefit of $240 a year for their participation and save the city millions of dollars in landfill fees.

The programme being run by RecycleBank, a Philadelphia-based company that operates recycling incentive programs in 20 states in addition to the UK, is expected to boost recycling rate drastically in the city. The program will work by collecting recyclables in special trucks that have sensors to weigh the material and based on the weight points will be given to the residents. These points will then be accumulated by each neighborhood and divided equally among participating households. The members of the neighborhood could exchange the points for coupons and gift certificates at local businesses.

A federal grant of $708,400 is paying for the equipment recycling boxes equipped with bar codes and truck-mounted scanners that record when a box is tipped into the back of the truck and RecycleBank is funding other initial costs. The Recycling Rewards programme will initiate in north Philadelphia in February, while for the entire city to implement it, Philadelphia’s 1.5 million people will have to wait until July.
