Madonno, the successful hot pop star, as we all know her, is here to show that she is a true environmentalist. Doing her bit for the world, the sensational singer back in 2006 joined hands with Michael Berg to give birth to an organization that aimed to bring end to the extreme poverty and hardships endured by Malawi’s one million orphans. Dubbed the ‘Raising Malawi’, the organization has undertaken a project to construct an institution dedicated to girls.
The Academy for Girls would be built paying special attention to green element. The institution built on a 46-hectare site will include a Library and Administration building, Dining Hall, Gymnasium, Wellness Center, Sports Field, 30 Classrooms, 12 Dormitories and 18 Staff Houses. Avoiding the use of burned bricks that are a reason for deforestation in Malawi, the organization prefers the use of locally sourced materials like Hydraform bricks. Double roofs will hold the breeze and induce natural ventilation. The structure will be glazed and to avoid heating up the interiors of the building by direct light, large over hangs will be used to provide enough shade.
The school will also incorporate photovoltaic panels on the roof to meet with the energy requirement. The black and grey water generated by the school will be intelligently cleaned by two wetlands, after which it will be used for landscape irrigation and educational agricultural plots. Rainwater catchment systems will capture and store water for small student gardens and other learning landscapes throughout the campus. Students will be imparted knowledge on ecosystems in Malawi using learning landscapes and educational agriculture areas.
