The way teachers discipline students is very important for a child’s development in early stages. If the kids are not inculcated with the right attitude, they may develop a wrong perspective of life as we live life as per our experiences. Teachers play an important role in a child’s life by giving them the ability to discern right and wrong. Knowledge is power and ignorance leads to hell. Here I am listing a few tricks for teachers to discipline the kids in right manner without affecting their impressionable and delicate psyche.
1. When the child is behaving badly and is angry
Divert his attention and engage him in doing something useful and productive. This way he will forget the negative emotion he was clinging on to and also do something constructive. Also the child will get the attention he was looking for. There is a strong message in this that rather than cribbing one should use his time in productive ways. Teachers need to discipline kids by being an example rather than telling them things.
2. If the kids get into a fight
One needs to remind them that they can make a better choice. Kids usually know when they are at the wrong side. If the kids change their mind, it is time to reward them with something. If they choose to fight then it is time up to cut off one of their privileges. This is a better way of dealing rather than screaming at them which makes them behave even more badly sometimes. When an adult is disappointed, it leaves a more healthy pressure on kids to change for the better.
3. Watch him over
Convey to the child that you are watching him when he is doing something wrong. This will probably stop the child. Being a silent spectator helps. Also a explanatory talk helps more rather than a simple no.
4. Look in their eyes
When children are acting up, get down to their level and look them in the eye. This leads to a conversation at equal level rather than a conversation in a dominating standing pose. Also, teachers need to recognize their talent. If the child is too bossy, they can be developed into good leaders. Teachers should try to explain to the child to use their ability in positive manner and should provide a proper outlet for the enhancement of their inborn talent. If the child is too energetic, his energy needs to be rightly channeled. Such a child can be a good sportsperson or good theater artist etc.
5. Co-operation
When the child is not listening, teachers need to have a tone of co-operation rather than a confrontation while talking to child. Teachers need to be assertive and tell the things to be done to children very clearly. Also teachers can tell kids by taking their name first and then state whatever they want them to do. This way they listen better. Teachers need to keep a closer distance to kids while telling them things rather than shouting across the room, which might not be effectual. Teachers should give the freedom to children to choose the work they want to do among a set of chores. This way all the kids will be enjoying what they do and it will not be chore anymore for them.
6. Give them tasks
To prevent child from misbehaving, they should be given tasks they love to do and then reward them. Also discussing with child beforehand about your expectations and his expectations make it easier for teachers to get good results at the end of the academic year. Make a provision for a space wherein child can be sent when he is misbehaving. The space can be a comfortable place where the child can sit and know how it feels to have a break.
