China to face severe food-shortage by 2030: Blame global warming and soaring population

climate change to strain china food supply by 2030

Climate change triggering drought in regions of the world is letting desertification, which in turn are eating away farmlands. This phenomenon, prevailing in China is growing worrisome and miserable.

And, to add to the crisis, its booming population, in turn is claiming more food supply each year – the present population of 1.3 billion is expected to reach 1.5 billion by 2030.

And the result? – A gruesome after-effects of major and severe food crisis across the country. Scientists fear, that it is in a little more than 20 years, China will see a food shortfall of 100 million metric tons!

By 2030, in addition to the alarmingly increasing demand for food, global warming may eventually shrink the harvest of grain by 5 to 10 percent – a significant fall, which is sure to snatch all ways of alternative production of sufficient crops to meet the dually increasing demand – as for feeding the extra mouths an extra 10 million hectares of arable land will be needed.

Ironically, China is already battling to provide food to one fifth of the world’s population with just 7 percent of the currently under cultivation lands, which are again shrinking alarmingly! Where from will it then get that 8 more percent of arable land?

There is practically no solution to it – then to just lower their carbon footprints sharply. Ah! The forthcoming Beijing Olympics is a better excuse and scope to fix a carbon-reduction target to a considerable extend.
