Born Free: More than 600 Siberian tigers will be released into the wild

Amidst the looming threat of extinction to global flora and fauna, the news of relasing 600 Siberian tigers into the wild has come as a whiff of fresh air. The tale is really inspiring and perhaps a worth replicating example for many other similar projects.

Birth of nearly 742 cubs in the last 21 years has given a new chance for the Siberian tigers to flourish once again in their natural habitat. In 1986 when Siberian tigers reached almost the point of extinction, then it was decided to breed them in Hengdaohezi Feline Breeding Centre, located in the suburbs of the north-eastern city of Harbin, in the northern Heilongjiang province. And the efforts of concerned authorities were aptly rewarded when tigers’ population begun rising once again. Today the population has risen so much that it has been decided to set them free into the wild and with release of 600 more the total population of Siberian tigers in the wild would be nearly 650.

As Siberian tiger is one of the world’s 10 most endangered species, I am little skeptic that would it be safe to release so many tigers into the wild? Aren’t we putting their life in jeopardy yet again?
