In its spree to cut down carbon emission to half by 2015, L’Oreal has announced their intention to install a biomass system at its factory in Libramount, Belgium. The green initiative will generate 85% of the electricity for the cosmetic industry’s giant by this summer. The working of the plant is based on anaerobic digestion system. The plant will capture methane gas, which is produced from the waste.

L’Oreal’s real green future

Along with cutting their carbon emission to 50% by 2015, the company’s goal is to go green by installing additional renewable energy systems like solar thermal and solar PV panels. However, the company also plans to cut their water use by 30 to 35 percent using techniques like rainwater capturing system and steam-cleaning technologies.

Rising green beauty fad

Avon: On June 2, 1989 it became the first company to banish animal testing of its cosmetic products.
Clarins Paris: Clarins respects and endeavors to protect the environment that actually provides all the raw material for its products. The manufacturing waste is collected, sorted and processed into environmentally friendly substances. The packing material too is recycled.
Lancome: The cosmetic company is making its vital contribution towards the environment. It intends to plant a tree for each of the first 10,000 bottles of the products sold and the range of the company’s products will be paperless.
Cargo: The company biodegrades its PlantLove lipstick tube in just 47 days.
Almay: Almay uses 28% post consumer recycled material in its packaging.

L’Oreal was attacked by the British Advertising Standards Authority on July 2007 for its advert on “Telescopic” mascara, featuring the famous Penelope Cruz. The advertisement claimed that the product will make your eye lashes 60% longer. The company had failed to state that Penelope Cruz was wearing artificial eyelashes in the advertisement. L’Oreal has faced many controversies in the past; however, it is now getting some cosmetic treatment owing to its pro-environment efforts.
