Beauty treatments in pagnancy: What to skip?

beauty treatments during pregnancy

Going to the salon for various kinds of beauty treatments is not usual for today’s woman. But when a woman experiences motherhood there are certain things in life that need modification. Certain restrictions are imposed on a woman as soon as she gets pregnant. This is not for the sake of the woman, but the baby growing inside her womb. The chemicals used in certain cosmetics and the techniques involved in some beauty therapies might at times be detrimental to the health of the fetus. So, it is essential to have complete knowledge of the ingredients, techniques and other technicalities involved in every beauty treatment that you opt for and wisely skip some of the beauty treatments during pregnancy. Here is a list of some beauty treatments to avoid when you are carrying:

1. Steam room and saunas

There is nothing more refreshing than thrusting your tired body into a steam room or a sauna after a hard day’s labor. But stay away from it when you are pregnant. Steam rooms and saunas have arrangements for creating artificial steam or hot water that relaxes the body. This artificially created temperature inside the steam room or a sauna can be detrimental for you as well as your yet-to-be-born baby.

When the whole body is exposed to this high temperature it can increase the core temperature of your body too. This will lead to skin burns, allergies and discoloration which you might not have experienced before pregnancy. Added to it, it can also lead to permanent birth defects of the baby inside the womb. It is especially noted during the phase of first trimester or a woman.

2. Teeth whitening

Your smile will never look mesmerizing unless you have sparkling white teeth. But plaque, staining, etc. can make your teeth yellowish, when the only way to recover your smile back will be to go for a teeth whitening session.

Dentistry and its connection to pregnancy are still to be studied further. Hence, the things to be avoided during this phase are yet to be researched too. So, the medical faculty dealing with this sector has not come up with a concrete conclusion about the ill effects of teeth whitening during pregnancy. But, what they advocate is that there are hormonal transformations during the time of pregnancy. This can make the gums more sensitive and quick to bleeding and irritation. Therefore, it is logical to avoid this treatment during pregnancy.

3. Tanning beds

You might find tanning bed an extremely convenient way for you to get a sun kissed look in the privacy of your salon and without the hassle of waiting hours under the sun for the purpose. But, it is literally banned during pregnancy.

Tanning beds are all about customized beds that expose your body to the Ultra Violet rays emitted from artificial sources. This ray can be fatal when the baby growing inside your womb is also exposed to it in the process. Discoloration of the skin is common in pregnancy due to hormonal changes within the body. Tanning bed will aggravate the intensity of skin discoloration further and in a permanent manner, which you will never like.

4. Tattoos

Although tattooing might be a very popular fashion statement of the recent times, but it is always better to stay away from getting tattooed during the period of pregnancy. The process of tattooing involves the involvement of a needle, local numbing cream and the use of certain color pigments. It has been found that this numbing cream in particular, consists of certain compounds that can cause allergic reactions to the skin. The most interesting thing is that pregnancy is a period that makes you more vulnerable. So, things that might not affect you much when you are not pregnant can turn out to be havoc when you are expecting.

5. Laser hair removal

This beauty treatment should be discarded altogether when you are pregnant. Your thin line of mustache might bother you or your hairy limbs might be an obstacle in you beauty, but you must always prioritize pregnancy in such a situation. The process of laser hair removal comprises of a laser light emitting instrument and a skin cream or emollient.

Thus, the cream or the emollient that is applied onto the spot chosen for hair removal will get absorbed into the skin pores and might get entered into your blood as well. This will be dangerous for the baby growing inside you. Moreover, the laser light that is passed in the procedure is not at all safe for the fetus, which can even die as a result.
