Bald and Beautiful Barbie: The long journey

All started with the creation of Facebook page, which garnered LIKES around 130,000 so far. This doll was inspired initially by Genesis Reyes, a Long Island girl who lost her hairs following a cancer treatment. She felt she no longer resembled any ‘princess’. This was overheard by someone, who approached Mattel to commercially produce dolls. The underlying idea was to assist young girls to deal bravely with hair loss triggered by medical treatments like chemo, alopecia or trichotillomania. Understandably, losing hair for a young girl is like losing her most valuable asset. But a bald Barbie can inspire and motivate those young minds to review their considerations on beauty and femininity as a whole.

Why is it a great idea?

Young girls mainly look up to other female members of her family and go on to admire their beauty. It’s natural for them to feel the pangs of frustration and disappointment after losing their locks, but a bald Barbie can be a perfect solution for this issue. Barbie, being a beauty symbol acts as an emotional and mental support for them to realize, beauty is not just all about hairs. A bald Barbie provides them an opportunity to allay their health related worries and anxieties.
