Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology is a medical specialty dealing with the diagnosis, treatment and cure relating to eye disorders. Not only an ophthalmologist deals with vision disorder but its scope is much wider. Any disease that has ultimate expression in symptoms concerning the eye falls under ophthalmology along with its diagnosis and treatments. Ophthalmological remedies cover both the surgical and medication procedures. Eye disorders attended include cataracts, glaucoma, retinal diseases and other defects related to vision.

Common diagnosis and treatment related to ophthalmology in India Cataract

This is an eye disease where the vision turns hazy. With age, the condition of the patient deteriorates. The eye lens gets clouded. Here an optical lens or contact lens does not provide a remedial solution.

The eventual answer lies in cataract surgery by an efficient and experienced eye surgeon. The surgical procedure entails replacement of natural eye lens by an artificial lens as described below.

Phacoemulsification with Intraocular lens implantation: A surgery is done to treat the disorder where nucleus of the cataract and cortex lens fibers is eliminated. The posterior epithelial capsule is left intact that holds the newly introduced artificial intraocular lens. It helps vitreous humor maintain distance with the anterior chamber of the eye

Cornea Transplant

The treatment here is to repair an injured or diseased cornea that is adversely affecting vision of the patient. Also known as corneal grafting, the transplant is of 2 types. They are:

  • Lamellar keratoplasty where a  portion of cornea is replaced
  • Penetrating keratoplasty where the whole cornea is replaced.

Lasik Laser Refraction

This surgical procedure is done for eyesight disorders like hyperopia, myopia and astigmatism.

This is basically modification of cornea to alter the focal point so that light is received on the retina. Vision becomes more focused and better.

When disorder sets in the macula, the central portion of retina macular degeneration is suffered.
This can lead to complete loss of eyesight. It can be diagnosed as dry and wet macular degeneration. To prevent this disorder surgery is required.

Retinal detachment

In this condition, the retina moves away from the layer of blood vessels feeding it oxygen and nutrients.

This disorder doesn’t give any pain but symptoms like blurred vision, slight shadow and floating objects are encountered.

Treatment lies in pneumatic retinoplasty, vitrectomy and scleral buckle surgery.
