Hardly ever might the passers-by get a chance to witness the glorious green roof atop the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) subway station at Eglington West in Toronto. Only inquiring eyes may perceive the overhead green initiative. The project, as part of the city’s green roof policy, took two years for completion since its conception. So, in a way, it reflects the city administration’s sincerity toward eco-friendly measures.

Terry McGlade, president of Gardens in the Sky, told that the Live Roof system, employed therein, is stackable and if there’s any leakage, only a 1-foot-by-2-feet thicket needs to tended. He further clarifies that the structure is impermeable enough to negate any such precondition. Though he kept mum on the actual cost incurred, revealing $25 to $30 per square foot still reveals a lot.

Bejeweled with 70,000 or 80,000 plants, mainly sedums, the 9,000 square-foot garden is hoped to increase the longevity of the roof by 20 years.

Still, it makes me wonder why administrations elsewhere don’t emulate such initiatives to cut down on carbon footprints and green their surroundings?
