Sea levels are rising alarmingly! The scientists across the world are warning on this for long as a dire consequence of climate change. And, perhaps the time to witness and suffer the consequences has already come! Indonesia may soon to feel the burn of global warming, if the world leaders fail to arrest its rising! It may swallow many of Indonesia’s Islands in less than 30 years!

Scientists have predicted that the sea water may deluge the Indonesian capital’s airport rendering it useless. And by 2080, the madden tide will drown the steps of the Dutch-era Presidential palace in Jakarta located 10 km inland.

On a visit to Jakarta earlier this year, Nicholas Stern, author of an acclaimed report on climate change said,

Island states are very vulnerable to sea level rise and very vulnerable to storms. Indonesia … is particularly vulnerable.

But, what worries the world leaders is the way to arrest this forthcoming devastation. This is what the recent Bali conference on climate change is discussing. Indonesian, with over 17,000 islands, are at risk of being washed away and are naturally anxious to find an effective agreement in place, that can be quickly implemented to help keep the rising seas at bay.

But, considering the U.N. climate report — that forecasts temperatures’ likely rise by between 1.1 and 6.4 degrees Celsius (2.0 and 11.5 degrees Fahrenheit) and sea levels by between 18 cm and 59 cm (seven and 23 inches) this century – nature’s fury does not seem to be tamed after centuries of exploitation, it faced in the hands of human beings.
