Postpartum: Exciting or depressing?

Postpartum Exciting or depressing

Those who have lately turned new mothers, are quite aware how difficult it is to handle postpartum syndrome. You might even find your mind a stranger because you fail to apprehend when it is depressed and when it is enjoying the new phase. It creates two completely juxtaposed feelings within you and the reason behind the same remains a mystery. The exact cause behind postpartum syndrome is unknown. But, if you suffer from the same and want to know further about it then you must read on this article.

The exciting new journey of motherhood

In general, a woman is happiest when she gets pregnant. But the period of happiness does not remain the same all the way. The initial days of pregnancy are always the happiest ones. The pain and the pre-delivery symptoms are the least ones during that phase. In this primary stage of conceiving, women do not have extreme visual symptoms like a full blown baby bump, excessive weight gain, tremendous morning sickness, excruciating pain, etc. So, excluding a few nominal visual symptoms, most of the grave ones still remain dormant.

Therefore, majority of women find it exciting to celebrate the impending motherhood. They love to be advised on child care. They love the importance they get from their husbands and the over night celebrity status they acquire. During this time they literally enjoy motherhood and keep their fingers crossed for the happy delivery of their baby. This happy phase persists for almost the third month of pregnancy, since after that the symptoms of conceiving become evident which brings along with it the trauma and anxiety of child birth.

The unexpected disappointment

One out of every eight women faces a typical mental condition during their journey from pregnancy to motherhood. This phase, which has been medically coined as postpartum syndrome, is observed shortly after the childbirth, preferably within a period of four months from delivery. The major triggers that are at work behind the syndrome are social, biological and psychological. The medical fraternity of the world has also discovered that the hormonal change during pregnancy depletes some essential vitamins from the body. This also leads to postpartum syndrome. Women suffer from depression due to unknown reasons. The depression gets intensified when they are alone.

Physiological changes as a result of pregnancy, often make some women depressed and hopeless. Some women wonder if they will ever be able to get back to their shape. They suffer from low self esteem which is a symptom of postpartum syndrome. Some women may feel that they have lost their importance in the family. Some might even think that their career has gone for a permanent toss. All these lead to frustration, anger and mood upswings. This syndrome must be checked or else it can lead to inconsistent child care, avoidance of responsibility, crisis in marital and family relations etc.

Strike the balance

Now that you know that postpartum syndrome is a typical mental state post child birth, you can cope yourself up to counteract it effectively.

1. One of the important measures you can take in order to strike a balance is to involve yourself in some constructive work rather than encouraging your mind to enjoy idle time. Be friendly with your husband and talk openly with him. Much of your worries, trauma and tension will be gone when you discuss mutually rather than brooding alone.

2. Instead of thinking that childbirth is the end of your life and career, imagine it as a temporary phase of leisure from your work and you will bounce back again with full enthusiasm. In the mean time, take it as a challenge to prove yourself as a perfect mother by taking up your newly acquired responsibilities with grace.

3. Practice meditation and deep breathing. It will inculcate in you positive thinking and help you get out of negative thoughts.

4. Do not deprive yourself from sleep. You had just passed through a really stressful situation. So, you need enough rest to rejuvenate yourself to compensate your lost energy naturally. If you face difficulty in sleeping, talk to your doctor.

5. Be positive that you will definitely get back to your shape after you get healed a bit and start exercising again. In the meantime, do not starve and deprive yourself from doses of vitamins and minerals from food. Lack of these nutrients will only worsen your condition. Avoid dieting temporarily.
