Parent-Teacher Conference essentials

Parent-teacher conferences are held atleast twice during each year, probably after the end of each term. These conferences give a fair chance to both the parents and the teachers to gather and talk about the child’s social and academic progress. His achievements are discussed and apart from that the flaws and other concerned topics related to him are also talked about. It’s rather a good move to plan out his future into the right direction. It is based on a serious note with an aim to provide a deeper view that the teacher holds for a student. In fact, preparing the whole schedule for the meeting can be stressful on the part of a teacher. To make this tedious task easier, one must know the requirements and the essentials so as to give a successful end to the conference.

1. Create Conference Worksheets

Before the formal meeting begins, prepare a worksheet that has rows and columns specifying each child. This worksheet should contain a few sections that are to be discussed during the conference which includes child’s strengths, areas of concern and improvement and next steps in this regard. Leave some space if you feel that you can take down important notes during the conference. You can also make a column specifying the grade marks of the children; this will make it easier for you in the sense that you will not have to carry the test notebooks of each child to the conference. This worksheet is the handy agenda of the entire conference. It helps you to concentrate on the main topics of discussion and the remedies that you can go for after the meeting is over.

2. Provide Student Work Samples

There is no other better way to judge child’s academic progress than showing his work samples. These work samples lets the parents and the teachers to learn about the child’s areas of improvement and the achievements and the progress that he has made. This work that you are going to show to the parents should highlight a number of experiences and this includes the rough outline and the final outcome of the writing sections, math quizzes and also the concerned issues that you have solved together. This way you can show the child’s efforts whether those are mediocre, poor or good results.

3. Formulate an Action Plan

After you are done with discussing the child and you have shown the concrete evidences of his sample works, tell the parents about the plans that you have for shaping the child’s better future. A teacher should not only pay attention to the weak students but should also look after the bright students and boost up their confidence level. This can pave a far more better leading to the success. The teacher should bring into the notice of the parents about the challenges that the child will have to face afterwards. At the time you are making your worksheet, keep in mind that you do make a column for “Next Steps” as this will help you to move on the right track that aims for a good future of the child. Think about the best goals that you have in mind for the child and then work in the same direction as per your planning in the next session or term.

4. Accentuate the Positive

Do not ever forget that the topic of discussion is the parent’s baby for whom they care a lot. The most necessary thing to be kept in mind is that; each child is good at something, be it academics or the extracurricular activities. So, highlight the positive points. Bring the right traits to the notice of the parent. For example, if the child is not so good in academics, make it a point that you also talk good about him, like the way he helps his classmates or his good mannerisms that he has. Of course, let the parents know about the flaws and the areas where the child needs to improve but then on the contrary remember that you also tell about the things that the kid knows. This positive attitude of yours will help you in a way that parents will trust on your words and not fall defensive for their child in any way. By maintaining a proper and healthy communication, you can not only find a solution for the child but apart from that you can enhance the growth of the child in a much better and effective way.
