Oil leak from Don Pedro ship

The ship, Don Pedro that had sank off the coast of the Spanish Mediterranean resort island Ibiza and has leaked some ten tons of fuel into the seawaters will be sealed by Monday, July 23.

The ship was used to cargo mewly made cars had sank on July 11, when it crashed into a small island. Immediately after the accident the environmental services and clean-up crew had begun working to control the spill and had ordered closure of three beaches on the popular resort island.

Luckily, the oil slick did not reach seawaters of Ses Salines nature reserve, which is a resting-place for migratory birds amid Africa and Europe as predicted earlier.

The Environment Minister Cristina Narbona said:

The reserve comprises land and sea, obviously there is pollution in the sea, we are trying to make sure it doesn’t get to the beaches of the reserve.

The ship was detected with new leaks on July 14, from where the fuel and hydraulic oil were releasing into the sea. The crew are still working to clean up fuel and oil from the sunken ship that was carrying 150 tons of fuel and 50 tons of petrol from Ibiza to Valencia and also removing polluted sand from seashores.

A Dutch salvage vessel is also being used to remove the remaining fuel from the sunken ship.
