Lamborghini joins the green party: The envy and the celebration!

Lamborghini joins the green party

Lamborghini is a killer. It stands out. It’s a hobby. But still, the sales are depleting; it doesn’t matter even if the luxury charm of the car is intact. Now, as per the general reaction all over, the sculptors of one of the world’s most talked-about cars seems to be piggybacking on the green tag to save it from drowning along with the other auto giants.

Green Luxury

The Italian luxury sports carmaker has made certain changes by improving their V12 engine combustion – making the car lighter, introducing “stop/start” systems and reducing friction. By introducing the improved engine it can reach a maximum speed of 350kph, and by 2015, it is likely to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 35%. In addition to this, its main factory at Sant’Agata Bolognese near Bologna is being equipped with 17,000 square meters of solar panels on the roof, and other measures are being taken to cut the factory emissions by 30%. In the emission test drive, the car emits 495g of CO2 per kilometer, which is three times more than the emissions produced from a typical saloon and five times that from the lowest carbon petrol cars.

It is not that Lamborghini is cutting its CO2 emissions, but other luxury cars too are planning to cut their emissions. Ferrari too wanted to cut their CO2 emissions from 400 grams per kilometer per vehicle to 280-300 by 2012.

CO2 bands for luxury cars

The luxury cars have been ranked in bands ranging from A to G, with the least polluting cars in band “A” and highest in band “G” emitting 225g/km of CO2. The sales of band “G” cars are falling. However, new band “H” should be made because many luxury cars emit in between 100g/km to 450g/km.

What’s wrong with the super rich going green?

Globally, less than 1500 Lambos are sold every year and sales are falling. I don’t blame those who take the latest initiative as a plain publicity stunt. No doubt, even if they cut their CO2 emissions to some percent then also they make the world’s most polluting cars. But who cares?

Lamborghini is not for your daily commuting requirements. If you are on the other side, you might wish to bring the whole life to a standstill, killing all reasons creating ripples in the environment. But that’s not possible. Let’s be realistic. A green Lamborghini is definitely better. Every step counts here and the effort is worth a toast. What’s wrong if the super rich too are joining the green race?
