When your kids say, ‘I hate you’

‘I hate you’, perhaps would be the last thing that you would ever like to hear from your kids. Your child might react outrageously over a lot of things. However, you might want to think about your reactions, before emotions get better of you.

Overreacting-Is it necessary?

Not really! Although, it may sound slightly odd, but you cannot make your kid understand by yelling at him. Agreed, that your brat has not done a right thing by yelling hard at you for not buying him his favorite stuff but does it become imperative of you to reprimand him at that very instant? Acknowledging your child’s emotions and making him understand the fact that you understand his feelings, is of prime importance.

Staying calm is the key

Positive and calm responses like ‘That’s alright, I still love you’, could embarrass your kid, as he/she would never expect a composed response after having said something hateful. Moreover, it would always calm your child for a moment to ponder on whatever he/she said in the gush of blood. A calm response to your yelling child also indicates towards an optimistic parenthood.

Tell, but don’t preach

Your kid might not understand the meaning of the vile phrase he used against you, but his underlying emotions exhibit his unhappiness and discontentment towards you. You as a parent have to let your child know how much it has hurt you. Nevertheless, it should include only telling the young adult know that you would appreciate if he never uses the phrase against you and decide mutually over the actions that might be faced as repercussions, in case he repeats such hateful words. Preaching doesn’t help your junior in understanding, as at times, he/she is unaware of the implications of the phrase.

Love matters

After a heated discussion, if you comfort your child with love and affection, he/she is more likely to understand that intense feeling. Hatred doesn’t stay for long as does the gentle feeling like love. It would only help you and your child to bond better and abate such extreme feelings.
