How do you like the idea of making buildings with animal blood?

Yes, you read that right! British architect Jack Munro thinks of putting one of the most prolific waste materials in the world, the animal blood, into some good use. Blood Bricks is a series of experiments conducted by him, which explores the use of fresh animal blood as an innovative building material. While being a potentially constructive product, the fresh animal blood is normally thrown away or burned. The gruesome yet ingenious project involves mixing fresh animal blood with sand and a preservative that prevents any fungus or bacteria.

This mixture was kept in a formwork and was then baked at 70 C for one hour, which coagulates the blood proteins into a solid insoluble mass. The new material is waterproof and serves as a good alternative to the mud bricks, especially in areas affected by rain damage such as Siwa and Egypt. He experimented with fresh blood glue first and then worked on the blood bricks.

A graduate of University of Westminster in London, Jack Munro was honored with the 2012 Rawat Award for Best Graduate Design Project for his thesis.
