Handling your child’s internet use

child’s internet use

With technology now available from a normal smartphone to a laptop, it has become important to keep your kids away from certain violent or non-acceptable things for their age. However, too much of control on kids might not be acceptable to them, creating a friction between the parents and the kids. These tips might help in keeping your child safe, and keeping an eye on their internet use without setting crazy regulations or limiting your child.

Avoid installing site-blocks

Many such softwares do not work properly. Many a times, health websites are banned for the reason of some words that might come in their ‘ban’ list. Moreover, some site blockers can be handled manually, which can be blocked by you.

Do not spy or read their personal chats

Children will resent and be unwelcome of moves like reading their chats or going through the texts in their mobile phones. This might make the kids think that you do not trust them. Instead of doing this, you can always ask them about what they are doing on the internet. This can be done in a friendly manner to make them feel that they are talking to one of their friends.

Do not be rude if your kids behave older than their age

You would surely be irritated if you see you kids using swear words or posting nude pictures on the internet. However, understanding that this is just a phase is important.

Understanding what they feel about you

It is important to understand what the kids feel about you. If you see them being rude about you on the internet, then analyzing the situation is important. Understanding and talking to them about why they did it is important, rather than shouting at them.

Do not convince them that online friends aren’t good

It is not always that kids chatting with other kids online are bad. Chatting with same age children, discussing about games or similar stuff can be normal. Instead of stopping them from doing so, you can always ask them who these friends are. Asking a positive question to kids will always give you the right information about what the kids are up to. They themselves make you aware of the activities going on the internet and in their friends circle.

Summary

Understanding your kids instead of shouting at them is important. Making them friends rather than being controlling parents is always recommended.
