Climate change to hit world tourism hard!

At a conference on ‘climate change and tourism’ in Davos, Switzerland, the UN presented a very striking report. The changes in climate pattern will also affect world travel over the next few decades. The meeting was a joint venture of UNWTO and UNEP (United Nations Environment program).

Here are the predictions as stated on the report. The UN predicts that there will be fewer tourists traveling internationally from now on. The tourists in the Americas won’t settle for long flights anymore. So the international flights will probably be the worst sufferers.

These folks are likely to spend more time touring their own countries namely Canada, US, Mexico, and Bahamas. This will happen because of the long summers ahead.

The UN also projected the fact that global warming will reduce the demand for travel. Fewer people will venture outside and will be eager to travel in the heat. Although, the overall travel demand is expected to increase over 4 and 5 percent a year.

In some of the tourism dependent economies like Maldives, Egypt, Thailand, Fiji, people are worried. I think they have got every reason to be worried. For these folks, no tourists translates to no income.

The influence of climate change in the tourism sector will be more intense. Co2 emissions can grow up to about 150%.

I think it’s time that we do something about this climate change issue. It seems like the climate change has been destroying everything from ecosystem to tourism.
