Potty training tips

Potty training toddlers doesn’t necessarily have to be difficult. If you are well prepared and are equipped with the right knowledge, it is easy to train your child to use the potty correctly. Use the right kind of approach to make the training a huge success. However, taking the wrong approach could have a negative impact on your child. So, if you are getting ready for the process here are 6 useful tips to follow for potty training success

1. Patience is very important

Patience is essential for any kind of task. Similarly, you have to be very patient when you are training your kid to use the potty. Though it might take some time to show the result of the efforts you have put in, patience really pays. Whatever be the setbacks during the training, do not lose confidence; keep them motivated all through the training period. If you are trying a particular kind of method that does not work, then never give up. There are other ways to follow.

2. Suitable Age

The age at which you should begin the potty training is very crucial. The best time to begin is between 18 months and three years. Some parents try to start early. But this will lead to more problems and it can become very difficult to teach them. Your child is also not physically ready to know or control the bowel movements too. So, wait for the appropriate time so that you can use the methods easily and help your child to use the potty correctly.

3. Signs of readiness

There are many things to watch and find out if your child is ready for the training. Some of the things to look out for are as follows. Check the consistency of the times of bowel movements and urination of your child, ability of maintaining dry diapers for about 2-3 hours continuously, understand and follow simple verbal commands you use, feeling of discomfort when the diaper is dirty or wet and whether your toddler can sit for 10 minutes or more.

4. Things required for the training

Once you know that it is time for you to begin the training and that your child is ready for it you have to keep so many things ready to begin the training. They are underpants or pull-ups, potty training chart, potty training chairs to be used in your child’s bathroom and rewards for successes. By keeping all these things ready you can begin the training and teach him to use it effectively. If you are a frequent traveler, you can accumulate all these items whenever you come across them. This will save you from spending time on for these things.

Always start the training by getting comfortable with the idea of potty training. Introduce the potty and other training supplies very carefully without creating any fear in your child. Make it very interesting by decorating it with different kinds of stickers and colors etc. Also, try to instill a sense of ownership in the potty. Other things you need to take care of during potty training is to make your child use the training pants, wash the hands at the bathroom sink and sit on the potty before using it.

5. Rewards for the training

One of the best ways to teach your children is by giving them rewards for doing things in the right manner. This will encourage them to follow things correctly and quickly. Always praise him and reward him if he does something correctly. In the same way, give him a reward for each success. He will become more interested and learn things easily. Make the training more fun-based than making it fearful or boring.

6. Be Positive

Always remain positive. Do not get frustrated if he/she is not able to pick up the training effectively. By being patient and repeating it for a few times you will be successful. Sometimes you may also need to use an interactive approach. Items like videos, games, books, songs, charts and role modeling may help you to instill the habit. Ensure that everyone in the family who are concerned with your child’s progress take interest in the potty training. From siblings to grandparents, everyone can be a part of the training process and encourage the little one to potty training success.
