5 Steps to suppress infants’ cough

An infant’s cough is not like that of an adult. An infant demands special care and protection. If your baby is suffering from persistent cough, you need to take up an immediate action. Cough can get worse and may prove fatal to your little ones. No parents can see their children in pain. A sudden cough can put you in a dilemma of what next to do. However, you need to be very careful in giving your child any kind of medication.

Here are some tips to give relief to a child from cough:

1. Lay the baby on its stomach

The first thing that you need to know is that once your baby stops coughing, you should immediately lay him on the bed on his stomach. This will make your child feel relieved as phlegm ever present in his lungs will be released in this position. But you need to be very sure that your child is comfortable with the position. In cases where your child continues to cough, you should carry him facing forward for easy expulsion of the phlegm.

2. Carry the baby vertically in your arms

Carry your child in such a way that his head lies on top of your shoulder. This will help the baby to discharge the phlegm easily off the lungs. Holding it in another positions, say, in a lying down position, can lead to difficulty in breathing.

3. Pat the baby’s back gently

Gently pat your child at the back. Always remember that his back is not strong like an adult. So, beware that your child is not hurt in any way with your caress.

4. Humidify your house

Many children catch cough due to lack of fresh air, especially during summer. It is advisable to use a humidifier to make the air inside your house cooler. This will provide fresh air to your child and make him/her less prone to infection.

5. Take the baby outside

In case you don’t have a humidifier at home, one convenient way is to take your child outside and expose the baby to fresh air. This can even show up immediate positive results. Fresh air gives a cleansing effect to your baby’s lungs.

These tips will certainly prove beneficial for your little one with a cough attack.
