Green ‘lunchtime’: Packing a litterless lunch for kids

It is convenient to include the ready-to-use food items in your kid’s lunch-box, being easy to use and time saving. But the more you add in a plastic bag or chips wrapper in his/her lunch, the more you add to environment menace. Having an excuse that it allows your child to save on the eating time allowing more play is supposedly nothing more than that, an excuse!

Small efforts from your end can contribute largely in reducing (if not eliminating) environmental concerns which are brought by using plastic bags, wrap-ups, juice boxes and many other such components. Many schools have the policy of advising and adhering to bringing litter-free lunches to the school. Even if your child’s school has adopted no such policy, you can do your bit. It can serve a long way and can pay you (and humanity) in the long run. And your small contribution can start today.

With the availability of diverse containers and zip bags, packing a litter-free lunch is easy. Moreover, it minimizes wastage as the left-over eatables can be easily brought back home to be re-used. Packing a litter-free lunch also ensures that food remains healthy (if you use superior quality food grade material). The warmth and special touch which a mother’s hands can create can barely be had in any of the packed food.

Certain considerations can help you in preparing a ‘green lunchtime’ for your kid.

Use washable food container

You can invest in a good quality lunch box which can possibly last a year (or even more). There are many Eco-friendly containers which can replace the plastic and paper bags. There are many styles and sizes to suit your need. And do not bother about your child being too fussy about its look (or color). There are plenty to attract your child. Visit a good shop nearby and get your child along with for a preferable choice.

Shop wisely

When buying food items, be prudent. Opt for bulk purchase. They can be both economical and conveniently packed. Generally, good companies offer large quantities of food items in specially designed containers which serve both as packaging and storage. Individually packed yoghurt, dried fruit, chips or juices can be less cost effective, besides producing more waste for the environment. Bush fresh food items.

The diverse sized containers can be good for storing and carrying different food items. You can purchase small sized containers (which may not come along with your kid’s lunch box). They can be used to pack additional items like sauces, cut fruits, etc.

Engage kids in preparing meals. When kids get involved in preparing their lunch, they will be less likely to throw their food. Make them realize the significance of reducing environment waste. As a responsible parent, it is important to give wisdom to your children which would help them enjoy a healthy lifestyle. By preparing a litter-free or ‘green’ lunch, you can be a significant contributor towards improving the environment.
