In the on-going FIFA World Cup, stadium officials are not interested in seeing which team spectators are supporting but what company made shirt they are wearing.
Shockingly, around one thousand Dutch fans were made to watch the match against Ivory Coast in their underpants only. In Fact, they were denied entry to the stadium for wearing orange trousers having a name of a Dutch brewery on it, which was not the official sponsor of FIFA 2006.
On the other hand, FIFA officials say that the trousers were an attempt at gaining free publicity and it was more or less like so-called ambush marketing. Moreover, they further argued that they had to protect the interest of the official sponsors.
Markus Siegler, FIFA communications director said, ‘Anyone can wear whatever they want but, if a company tries to carry out ambush marketing, FIFA must prevent that happening’.
