And one of the more salient and yet striking features of the planet include freshwater lakes that can be found almost everywhere in the world. These lakes can captivate you with their beauty and can truly be called ‘paradises on earth’. So if you are on the lookout for some of the most beautiful and stunning freshwater lakes in the world, here is a list you can start with during this summer!

The Plitvice Lakes in Croatia

A total of 16 different freshwater lakes make up this ethereal haven in Croatia which also houses some of the most breathtaking waterfalls in the world. The lakes house contain crystalline blue-green waters and are surrounded by lush green vegetation.

The best way to take in this paradise would be to start at the lower lakes and the move upwards via wooden planks to the higher lakes. A hike through the area would enable you to catch glimpses of a wide variety of wildlife, including boars, bears, deer, wildcats and wolves. Don’t forget to visit the Veliki Slap (also called ‘Big Waterfall’), a 230 feet high waterfall that is said to be the tallest in the region.

The Peyto Lake in Canada

Located in Alberta, the Peyto Lake is a part of the Banff National Park and is noted for its unique, striking beauty. Surrounded by craggy mountain tops and dense vegetation, the 1.7 mile long lake houses brilliant turquoise colored waters, something which is very rare for a lake on this side of the planet.

The best way to get the most of this picture postcard perfect lake would be to drive up to Bow Summit, the highest point in the Icefields Parkway and hike along a steep trail to the so called ‘overlook’ point which would let you enjoy stupendous views of the Peyto Lake and the surrounding areas. It would all take a moment to sink in for sure!

The Loch Lomond Lake in Scotland

Looking just like the backdrop of an ancient Victorian movie, the Loch Lomond Lake stretches for over 24 miles and is dotted with plenty of islands, some so small enough to disappear under the water at time (when the water level is high), and some large enough to be inhabited by locals.

The lake is surrounded by beautiful green hills and ancient castles. Boat rides are offered at the lake, with most of the rides stopping at the Inchmurrin Island to let visitors catch glimpses of a Lennox Castle dating back to the 14th century and a monastery dating back to the 7th century.

Lake Matheson in New Zealand

Also called as the Mirror Lake, Lake Matheson is known around the world for its impossibly perfect reflections of Mount Tasman and Mount Cook which act as beautiful backdrops to the calm waters of the lake.

The lake is located on South Island and is best visited at dawn when the water is perfectly calm and undisturbed. And in addition to enjoying the striking reflections, you can explore the nearby areas which include the suspension bridge called Clearwater River, and a 1 mile long trail that would take you past exotic rimu and kahikatea trees which are known for their tall trunks and bushy tops.

The Sheosar Lake in Pakistan

Although the country is not that popular with tourists, it has some breathtaking locales that are absolute delights to visit. And Asia’s answer to the Loch Lomond Lake in Scotland is the amazingly beautiful Sheosar Lake in Pakistan.

Located in the Deosai National Park in Northern Pakistan, the lake is almost 2.3 kilometers long, 1.8 kilometers wide and is situated at a staggering height of 4142 meters above sea level. Surrounded by lush green pastures, the lake offers mind blowing reflections of the surrounding regions.
