Soufriere Hills, Montserrat

Soufriere Hills, Montserrat

The Soufriere Hills is an active volcano lining in the Caribbean Island, Montserrat. It became active in 1995 after long period of dormancy and since then it has continuously erupted. This had caused a great destruction causing harm to various habitats and destroying the capital city Plymouth resulting in evacuation of about two third of population. The current pattern of activity of the volcano includes growth of dome and the Montserrat Volcano Observatory monitors the volcano.

The seismic activity had occurred in 1897-1898, 1933-1937 and 1966-1967 and the earthquakes continued to occur in three epicenter zones namely beneath the Soufriere Hills volcano, underneath the St. George’s Hill and the ridge running northeast. The Government of Montserrat and United Kingdom have worked together to provide aid to the people that are suffering due to the disaster caused because of volcanic eruption. Most of the settlements are badly affected by pyroclastic flow that occurred during the first eruption of the volcano.
