Selous Game Reserve, Tanzania

Selous Game Reserve is located in the south of Tanzania. In 1982, it was designated as a World Heritage Site because of its vast diversity of wildlife. The total area covered by the park is 54,600 square kilometers with additional buffer zone and was established in 1922. No human settlement is allowed in the reserve. Wildlife Division of the Tanzanian Ministry of Natural Resource and Tourism controls the reserve. The fauna found in the reserve includes typical animals of savanna such as elephants, African Wild Dog, Cape buffalo, hippopotami and crocodiles.

The northern section of the park that lies along the Rufiji River is reserved as a photographic zone for the visitors. Various lodges and camps are situated along the riverside and the lake system. The main eye catching features of the park include Rufiji River that flows into the Indian Ocean and a 100-meter deep canyon. The habitat of the reserve comprises of wetlands, typical Acacia savanna and Miombo woodlands. The popular activities in the reserve are boat trips on the Rufiji River and Walking safaris. In 1976, the reserve was known for its large population of about 109,000 elephants but was later dropped to about 13,000 in 2013.
