Machu Picchu, Peru: A familiar representation of the Inca world, Machu Picchu was built in the 15th century for an Inca emperor. Based in the Andes mountains, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is about 80 km away from Cusco. The Inca architectural style reflects clearly in its buildings that are made of rectangular blocks of stones fitted together without using mortar. This style actually helps these buildings shift a little and not to collapse when earthquakes or volcanic eruptions rock this place. The site has more than 140 buildings, temples, parks, residences and sanctuaries. Visitors mostly hike through Inca trail that ends at Machu Picchu.

Stonehenge, England: One of the most preferred locations to be visited by people is Stonehenge that is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its circles of erect stones from around 2500 BC are the main features that attract visitors who wish to explore the architecture at this site. There is also a surrounding ditch and earth bank dated about 3100 BC. It is believed that Stonehenge had been serving as a burial ground from older times. That may be the reason you can see hundreds of burial mounds around this site. You may also witness various Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments surrounding this place.

Pyramids of Giza, Egypt: Most of the appreciators of wonderful architecture must be already aware of this ancient marvel in the city of Giza, known as The Great Pyramids. This series of pyramids includes the Pyramid of Khufu, Pyramid of Khafre and Pyramid of Menkaure. These pyramids honor some great Pharoahs, while their spouses are entombed in the nearby smaller pyramids. One of the Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, these Giza pyramids are the most famous structures in the world that are manmade. If you plan to visit this place, take a guided tour of its temples, chambers, galleries and passageways. The site offers easy accommodation, dining, shopping and visiting options. It can be a memorable experience if this site is on your tourism list.

Temples of Khajuraho, India: One of the most visited places in India, these temples witness a great architecture through their erotic sculptures. It is the largest group of Jain and Hindu temples from medieval times. Grouped into eastern, western and southern divisions, these temples are all made of sandstone without any mortar use. Mortise and tenon joints keep the stones together and they remain intact by gravity. Such realistic sculptures require very precise joints. Also, there are architraves and columns built with megaliths. This marvelous architectural site is also on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.

Petra, Jordan: Also known as the Rose-Red City, Petra is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is all marvelously carved out of rocks. Some 2,000 years ago, its inhabitant Arab industrialist called Nabataeans built its famous monuments and buildings. Their engineering skills are perfectly reflected in the Al-Kahzneh facade that has been carved out of sheer rocks in dusty pink color. A narrow gorge named Siq, which is more than 1 km in height, is the entry to Petra. You can just walk down or take a horse ride through this gorge. The city’s amazing architecture can then be witnessed in the form of a Roman-style theater, temples, obelisks, monasteries, museums and rock carvings. You would not feel like missing anything if you are on this site’s visit.

Khmer Temple, Angkor Wat, Cambodia: Famous for its delicate details, the massive temple dates back to the12th century. The wonderful architecture is reflected in its platform galleries and bas-relief sculptures of warriors and dancers. The beauty is displayed at its best in the temple’s moat if you visit during sunrise or sunset. This and several other temples here were built by the Khmer civilization during 9th to 15th century. You would find many other attractions close to the temple, such as the Archaeological Park. This site is another UNESCO World Heritage Site and is symbolic of Cambodia.
