Puerto Rico: The culinary capital of the Caribbean

Restaurants

Foodies flock to San Juan

Puerto Rico bills itself as the “culinary capital of the Caribbean” and with so many top-class local and international restaurants, it’s hard to dispute this claim.

Traditional Puerto Rican food is hearty and heavy on the pork, deep-fried snacks, yucca, plantain, rice and peas. You can find local spots littered throughout San Juan and other towns across the island.

Carnivores take note: Spit-roasted suckling pig is everywhere in Puerto Rico. Known locally as Lechon, this deeply delicious, quintessential Puerto Rican food is best enjoyed outdoors at a roadside Lechonera, or cafeteria. For those who are really fanatical for pig flesh, cruise down La Ruta del Lechon – a stretch of highway in the Guavate region known for it concentration of the eateries.
