Paoy Lake National Park, Philippines

Paoy Lake National Park is located in the IIocos province, Philippines and is preserved under the National Integrated Protected Areas System. The total area covered by the park is 387.5 hectares of land along with five barangays sharing its coastline. The lake is the largest natural lake in the IIocos province. The lake serves as an important source for irrigation and has a depth of six meters. The lake suffered considerable reduction in the water level due to the golf course that used the water, which resulted in killing of the fishes.

The Protected Area Management for the lake divided it into management zones and ordered to set a ceiling of two hectares of fish cages for the protection of the fishes for each coastal barangay. The lake consists of no tributaries, most of the lake’s inflow comprises of surface runoff, and ground water from the surrounding hills that comes during the rainy season.

The lake consists of fauna mainly macrophytes, zooplankton and phythoplankton that includes eight species of cladocerans, eight species of copepods and eleven species of rotifers. Fish found in the lake are mudfish, catfish, and tilapia. The flora is found on the slopes around the lake like banaba plants, gmelina, and acacia.
